Up And Alive: Innovative Packaging Design by Mario Alejandro Stephens

Combining Art and Energy to Stand Out

Inspired by 2D vector artworks and hand-drawn letterings, Mario Alejandro Stephens created the Up And Alive packaging design to entice buyers and differentiate the brand from its competitors. With its vibrant graphics and bold typography, this design aims to capture the attention of health-conscious consumers.

The Up And Alive project involved the creation of surface graphics for three dried fruit snack packages. Targeting a niche audience focused on healthy living and nutritious meals, the design team at Up And Alive opted for a style that combines bold vectors and lettering to evoke excitement and energy. Each package features eye-catching fruit vectors scattered across the front, accompanied by large hand-drawn letters.

The packaging templates were provided by the client, eliminating the need for a design process. However, color played a crucial role in setting the tone. The surface graphics and background colors were carefully selected using different PMS hues in Adobe Illustrator to ensure optimal separation for CMYK digital printing. The final packages were printed on high-white matte 200 gsm stock, allowing for neat folding. The company logo, printed on high-white 150 gsm adhesive uncoated stock, adds the finishing touch.

Measuring 85 mm x 46 mm x 225 mm, the Up And Alive packaging design is not only visually appealing but also functional. When shoppers enter grocery stores, they are immediately drawn to the energetic aesthetics of the paper bags. This initial connection creates a personal bond with the product, motivating customers to pick it up and read the information. Up And Alive leverages these emotions to engage with its customers and establish a strong and immediate connection.

The Up And Alive project began in March 2016 and was completed in June 2016. Throughout the design process, extensive research was conducted on existing brands in the same market segment. Brainstorming sessions and wordlists were used to generate unique ideas for both the company logo and the package designs. Hand-drawn sketches were then digitized and refined to create the final vector graphics.

One of the main challenges faced during the design process was finding a way to harmonize all the elements in the package graphics to create a cohesive and rewarding experience for customers. The inclusion of a banner shape, which was not initially part of the early sketches, proved to be a pivotal addition. It greatly improved the overall layout of each design and expedited the digital creation process.

The Up And Alive packaging design showcases the perfect blend of aesthetics and functionality. With its bold lettering, energetic concepts, and vibrant fruit vectors, it captures the essence of a healthy and rewarding lifestyle. This design has been recognized for its excellence and innovation, receiving the prestigious Iron A' Design Award in 2019.
